General Summary
The Fleet Supervisor (FS) oversees day-to-day transportation operations. This role includes managing approximately 40 drivers, ensuring on-time deliveries to stores, optimizing tractor utilization, handling inbound reverse logistics, and maintaining driver safety and legal compliance.
Duties & Responsibilities
80% of the role focuses on driver safety, FMCSA, and DOT compliance. You’ll be responsible for on-time delivery routes, tractor utilization, and driver pay accuracy.
20% of the role involves building strong relationships with drivers by understanding their work-life balance, meeting their expectations, and holding quarterly face-to-face meetings. You will also oversee driver training, retention, idle time reduction, fuel efficiency (MPG) improvements, load dispatch assignments, equipment usage, and the effective use of driver management systems. Promoting a safety culture by evaluating drivers’ safety performance is key.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Proven leadership with deep understanding of dedicated transportation operations and FMCSA/DOT regulations
Familiarity with Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program
Strong communication (written and verbal), listening, interpersonal problem solving, and innovative thinking skills
High attention to detail, strong planning, and organizational capabilities
Ability to interpret driver logs, hours of service, and understand dedicated fleet operations
Proficiency in transportation optimization software for routing, tendering, scheduling, and shipment tracking
Ability to perform well in a high-stress environment
Proficient with MS Office applications
Willingness to travel up to 10%
Work Experience & Education
Bachelor’s degree in Business or Logistics preferred, or comparable experience (1–3 years) in transportation operations for a retailer, manufacturing company, major carrier, or logistics firm required
1–3 years managing at least 40 drivers preferred
1–3 years of onsite driver management experience preferred
Minimum 1 year experience with Driver Dispatch Management Systems (e.g., McLeod, TMW, Telogis, Dispatch Tracks, AS400)
